Cooking is one of the things I enjoy doing most. What can I say? I love food. And being a vegan, it tends to help when I get to know every aspect of what is going into my food. With cooking, measurements are extremely important. No I am not talking about measuring out each and every item with a measuring cup and a tablespoon. But even when you are just throwing something together, you are subconsciously measuring.
Throwing together ingredients is usually in the form of measuring. Add a bit of this, add some more of that. You try to balance everything out, so flavors aren’t overpowering or no longer tasted. Get everything right and your taste buds have suddenly hit flavor nirvana. Mess up, and you end up tasting a big mess.
When writing recipes, exact measurements are one of the main things I worry about. I like to experiment, and throw stuff together in whatever order I like. But if I were to copy down that recipe, I can’t just say “throw in a couple fists full of flour, and pour in the sugar until it looks right”. The only way that can get exactly what I came up with is if my measurements are exact. Everyone has different names for measurements, but knowing the language of cooking can be your key to using someone’s recipe for a great meal.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) = 3 teaspoons (tsp)
1/16 cup = 1 tablespoon
1/8 cup = 2 tablespoons
1/6 cup = 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons
1/4 cup = 4 tablespoons
1/3 cup = 5 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon
3/8 cup = 6 tablespoons
1/2 cup = 8 tablespoons
2/3 cup = 10 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons
3/4 cup = 12 tablespoons
1 cup = 48 teaspoons
1 cup = 16 tablespoons
8 fluid ounces (fl oz) = 1 cup
1 pint (pt) = 2 cups
1 quart (qt) = 2 pints
4 cups = 1 quart
1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts
16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)
1 milliliter (ml) = 1 cubic centimeter (cc)
1 inch (in) = 2.54 centimeters (cm)
So do you measure your ingredients step by step, or do you just throw stuff together hoping it works? Leave me a comment below!
